Chagford was reconstituted as a retained (part-time) fire station of the Devon County Fire Service in 1948, after a local campaign was sparked following the closure of the National Fire Service station at the end of 1946. A new station was converted out of an old farm building (used formerly as a piggery), in Manor Road. This site was used until the new Fire and Rescue Centre was built in 1987.
