Full description

English Heritage, 2013, Intertidal and Coastal Peat Database: Devon (Website). SDV350876.

Record ID 321. Year; 1972. Deposit location; SS 4319 2958. Deposit description; expanse of grey to brown silty and sandy peat (36x20m) revealed during a storm. Between 0.45-0.61m thick. On pebble bed at least 0.3m thick. Depth of deposit; peat base was 2.74 m below high water mark. Williams’ submitted radiocarbon ages.

ID 228. Depth of sample; 2m below high water mark. Dated sample description; wood from roots in situ in peat bed 0.6m thick. Uncalibrated date 4995 ± 105 years BP. wood fragments from peat bed exposed by exceptional storms in March 1970 on beach. Part of submerged forest drowned by Flandrian transgression.

ID 229. Sample location; SS 4319 2958. Dated sample description; peat. Uncalibrated date; 3075 ± 100 years BP. Probably contaminated.

No other similar sites in SW and a nationally important site. Mesolithic and later –including footprints. Former wet woodland and fen, now in the intertidal zone, Midden with flint artefacts, animal bone, plant environmental proxies.
