Woodcourt B. Ex. Arch. No. 9. Watercourse: Harbourne River. Historic function: Served Woodcourt.
This is one of two weirs that served Woodcourt. Documentary evidence for the leat is believed to date back to 1244. It may have been for a domestic water supply or served a mill.
The weir is at an angle to the river with the leat on the right bank. It survives only adjacent to the river bank (although the survey was undertaken during high water levels and further remains may survive below water level). The weir is of stone and is about 1.5 metres long. No sluice was evident.
Identified as a candidate for further basic survey due to high water levels at the time of the original survey.
[Note: the grid reference given by Exeter Archaeology for the weir is SX77295609, where current mapping shows the leat leaving the river. However, the 1880s-1890s Ordnance Survey map shows the leat extending further upstream with the weir at SX77225612.]
