Full description

English Heritage, 05/02/2015, Okehampton Camp. Various Buildings - Batch 1. EX20 1QP (Correspondence). SDV357838.

English Heritage has been assessing a number of buildings at Okehampton Camp for addition to the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. Following an initial assessment of Buildings 62 and 137 it has been decided not to take the buildings forward to a full assessment. The buildings will not, therefore, be added to the List at this time.
Despite the historic interest granted by its location at Okehampton Training Camp, the buildings are considered to have no special architectural interest and do not meet the criteria for designation for the following principal reason: Intactness: both sets of stables have been radically altered since their construction, with only their rear wall containing original fabric.

Twenty two troop stable blocks were originally built but only two (Buildings 62 and 137) survive. They were originally built as temporary structures of timber with corrugated iron roofs. Each block was designed with a harness room at one end but these were redesignated as forage stores after january 1899. The stables were replaced in concrete after September 1924 but retained the curved corrugated iron sheeting on the roofs. They were originally open fronted but this has now been infilled with concrete block. The rear, forage store and opposide end walls are of brick.
The floor area allocated for a troop horse was a lot smaller than for an officer's charge and the troop stables were little more than horse shelters, with stalls provided for two horses per 2.74 metre (9 feet) bay. Running the full length of the blocks is a concrete standing area with tethering rings.
Block 62 was used as an ammunition store in the early 1950s and 137 as a barrack block until it was converted into a miniature range. It was used as such until 2000. Today both buildings function as camp stores. Map object based on this source.
