Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2014-2015, East and Mid Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV356883.

An extraction pit is visible as an irregular earthwork, circa 20 by 35 metres across, on images derived from lidar data captured in 2010, and on aerial photographs taken in 1947 when it was partly colonised by trees. It is one of numerous former whetstone pits in this area, and probably became disused more recently than others to the north in Blackborough Woods, as its function was still known enabling it to be marked as one of two ‘Old Whetstone Pits’ on the late-19th century mapping.
