HER Number:MDV112361
Name:Orchard South East of Southbrook Court, Rockbeare

Summary

The remains of a former field boundary and probable post-medieval to possibly early 20th century ridges made for fruit tree planting and drainage were visible as earthwork banks and ditch to the south-east of Southbrook Court, Rockbeare, on aerial photographs of 1946 and images derived from lidar data. The banks and boundary ditch probably survive as subtle earthworks.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2014-2015, East and Mid Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV356883.

The remains of a former field boundary and earthwork ridges were visible on aerial photographs of 1963 to the south-east of Southbrook Court, Rockbeare.
The banks are circa 6 metres in width and are interpreted as probable fruit tree planting banks of post-medieval to 20th century date, made to enhance drainage within an orchard. They were probably aligned to drain into a drainage channel either to the east or west.
The banks coincide with an enclosed area on the Tithe Map for Rockbeare, the northern field boundary matching a ditch visible on the 1940s aerial photograph and images derived from lidar captured in 2005. The field boundaries are not depicted and the ridges do not correspond with an area symbolised as orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch first edition, supporting the interpretation that the orchard had passed out of use between the 1840s and 1880s.
The banks and boundary ditch probably survive as subtle earthworks.
