Summary

The remains of probable post-medieval to 20th century ridges made for fruit tree planting and drainage were visible as earthwork banks to the immediate west and east of Southbrook House, formerly Higher Southbrook, Rockbeare, on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and digital images derived from lidar data. The remains of probable post-medieval to 20th century ridges made for fruit tree planting and drainage were visible as earthwork banks to the immediate west and east of Southbrook House, formerly Higher Southbrook, Rockbeare, on aerial photographs of the 1940s and digital images derived from lidar data.
The banks were approximately 6 to 7 metres wide and aligned cross contour. They fell within the area of orchards depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25inch map. Those to the east of Southbrook House had originally probably been associated with a farmstead east of Southbrook Lane, depicted on the Tithe Map for Rockbeare, but removed by the 1880s.
The orchards had been largely cleared of trees by 1989 but retained a very light tree cover in places. The relict ridges remain visble as slight earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2005, and probably survive as low earthwork banks.
