The remains of post-medieval to 19th century ridges probably made for fruit tree planting and drainage were visible as earthwork banks to the north-west of Southbrook House, Braodclyst, on aerial photographs and digital images derived from lidar data.
The parallel earthwork banks, approximately 5 metres wide and aligned roughly north-north-west to south-sout-east, did not correspond with any orchard depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25inch map, which might support the interpretation that the orchard passed out of use prior to the 1880s. The plot of land is also listed on the Tithe Apportionments for Broadclyst as arable land, which pushes the date for the removal of the orchard prior to the 1840s.
However, the earthworks strongly resemble other evidence of relict orchards in this area supported by the map evidence.
A broader earthwork bank aligned roughly east to west appears to be crossed by the possible orchard banks and might be evidence of an earlier field boundary.
The relict ridges probably survive as low earthwork banks.
