The remains of ridges probably made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage in orchards of probable post-medieval to 19th century date were visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as earthwork banks at Crockenhayes Farm, Whimple.
The ridges do not correspond with any orchard planting depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25inch map, and the plot is listed as arable on the Tithe Apportionments for Broadclyst. This might support the interpretation that the orchard passed out of use prior to the 1880s.
The banks cannot be seen on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2005 and 2010 and have probably been levelled.
