Three curvilinear ditches are visible on aerial photographs taken between 1946 and 1955 as earthworks on the valley sides east of The Barton. They are aligned approximately along the contour, dropping less than 5 metres across a 400 metre length, and interpreted as water meadow gutters of probable 19th century date. The southernmost seems to have diverted water using a sluice from the centre of the valley and distributed it across the lower part of the hillside to the east. The two northernmost originate from the vicinity of the farmstead, and it is possible that they operated as an ‘integrated’ system, mingling manure from the farm with water to fertilise and irrigate the hillslopes below the farm. The gutters are visible as pale cropmarks in a ploughed field on aerial photographs taken in 1963, and at least one section remains visible as a dark cropmark on aerial photographs taken in 2010, indicating that earthworks or buried ditches survive.
The water channels are depicted on the historic mapping, so they have not been transcribed as part of this project.
