The ditch does not match and depicted boundary but appears to abut former field boundaries at either end.

The ditch falls within a field pattern charaterised as being based upon medieval strip fields,

A possible former field boundary potentially of medieval origin was visible as a shallow curvilinear earthwork ditch to the south of Courtneys Farm on digital images derived from lidar data. The ditch did not correspond with any boundaries depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25 inch map or the Tithe Map for Clyst Hydon, which might support the interpretation that it had been removed prior to circa 1840. It did, however, fall comfortably within the historic field pattern that has been characterised as being based upon medieval strip fields, and was possibly aligned on the corner of a depicted field enclosure, thereby defining the curvilinear north-western boundary of a narrow field enclosure.
