Orchard banks of probable post-medieval to modern date are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards, to the northwest of Winkleigh Farm. An orchard is depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s, although by 1946, aerial photographs show that the orchard trees have been partly thinned out, leaving a series of earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established, visible. The northwest to southeast aligned banks occupy an area of approximately 0.51 hectares of gentle southwest facing slope, within a single rectilinear shaped plot depicted on the First Edition OS map. The site of the orchard appears to post-date a probable extraction pit which is located along the southern edge of the plot. The orchard banks remain visible on aerial photographs of 2000.
Ordnance Survey, 2015, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV357601.
