A possible former quarry or extractive pit of probable post-medieval to 19th century origin was visible on aerial photographs of 1945 as an earthwork pit on the north-east-facing slopes east of Beacon Down Lodge, Beacon Hill.
The pit was roughly circular, shallow in depth but measured over 20 metres in diameter. A much smaller pit is depicted in roughly the same location in the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition Map of the 1880s-1890s. This might support the interpretation that the quarry had passed out of use by the late 19th century and is probably evidence that a small pond had formed or was made in the base of the former quarry pit.
The possible former quarry or extractive pit can be seen as a shallow earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data of 2005.
