On the tithe map of 1842 mention is made of a plot of land called 'Dog Orchard', situated at Stedcombe Farm. Although this piece of ground is considerably more than one acre in extent, it may be the orchard connected with a legend attached to the tomb of a priest in a recess in the north wall of the chancel of the church of St Michael at Axmouth. The old tradition states that when the priest lay dying he requested that his favourite dog should be buried at his feet, and as an indemnity he left to the church of Axmouth a small piece of ground which has been known as 'Dog-acre Orchard'.
