Evidence of former orchards of probable post-medieval to 19th century origin was visible as low and narrow earthwork banks on aerial photographs of the 1940s to 1960s, on the north-facing slopes on the southern edge of Upton Pyne village.
The banks were roughly 5 metres wide and arrange in a north to south orientation, crossing the contours of the higher combe slopes. This was probably to aid drainage of excess surface water along the combe to the north.
The plots of land within which the banks were visible were depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map as orchards. Three plots were depicted as orchards, but banks remained visible and very lightly planted with trees in only two of the three plots on RAF vertical photography of 1947 and 1964. The former orchards have now been developed for housing and the tree banks levelled.

Ordnance Survey, 2015, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV357601.

The former orchards are now developed as housing.
