Possible former field boundaries of medieval to post-medieval date are visible as a series of earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1948 onwards, to the northeast and east of Shiles Farm. The linear and curvilinear earthworks are northeast to southwest and northwest to southeast aligned and broadly respect the historic field patterns depicted on the Parish Tithe Map of approximately 1838-48 and classified as 'medieval enclosures based on strip fields' under the Historic Landscape Characterisation project. The boundaries recorded here, however, appear to have passed out of use by this time. The earthworks occupy an area of approximately 13.17 hectares of moderate to gentle west facing slope and are located in close proximity to a number of earthwork banks of other possible former field boundaries and lynchets recorded to the east and south. The earthworks remain visible on Lidar-derived images of between 1998-2014.
