Earthwork cuttings of possible post-medieval to 19th century extractive workings are visible on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, to the west of Newcott. The sinuous earthworks are visible to a length of approximately 250m, are northeast to southwest aligned and have been cut into moderate northwest facing slope. A small rectilinear and circular clearing to the immediate north may represent working areas or possible building platforms of the quarry site. The earthwork cuttings are partly depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s. They remain partly visible on aerial photographs of 1996. Some caution should be, however, be exercised and it is equally possible the earthworks are in part the result of natural slumping.
