Summary

The remains of probable post-medieval to 20th century ridges made for fruit tree planting and drainage were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s, to the south-east of Higher Northcote Farm, Honiton. The earthwork banks are not likely to survive.

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The earthwork banks largely correspond with a depicted orchard.

Parallel linear earthwork banks were visible under light tree cover.

The remains of earthwork ridges or banks were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s, to the south- east of Higher Northcote Farm, Honiton.
The banks are spaced on average 5 metres apart, and are aligned obliquely cross-contour. They correspond with an orchard depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25inch First Edition map, and are interpreted as probable fruit tree planting banks of post-medieval to 20th century date, made to enhance drainage within the orchard. The banks were not visible on digital images derived from lidar data are not likely to survive as earthworks.
