Summary

A large oval hollow, probably the remains of an extractive pit of medieval to post-medieval date, was visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs and digital images derived from lidar data, on the west facing slopes of Crook Hill, Combe Raleigh parish. It is one of three similar pits visible in close proximity.

An oval earthwork pit was visible.

The pit was not visible as an earthwork, and has probably been levelled.

A large oval hollow was visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1982 on the west facing slopes of Crook Hill, Combe Raleigh parish. The earthwork measured circa 50 by 35 metres in diameter. It was situated on the 115m metre contour on Crook Hill, and is one of three pits visible in close proximity, of similar plan and situation, none of which were depicted on the Tithe Map for Combe Raleigh This might support the interpretation that the earthwork was the remains of an extractive pit of medieval to 19th century date, one of three exploiting a seam or outcrop of mineral resources at this particular elevation.
