Two possible former extractive pits of probable post-medieval to 19th century date were visible on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and digital images derived from elevation data as earthworks on the west and north-west-facing slopes overlooking Higher Wick Farm, Luppitt parish.
The southern visible earthwork, centred on circa ST17220417 was roughly circular in shape, measuring circa 35 metres in diameter. The northern visible earthwork, centred on circa ST17220423 was roughly triangular in shape, located in the corner of the field, and measured up to 33 metres across.
The earthworks did not correspond with any pits or quarries depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, although a small pond was depicted on the site of the northern pit, probably taking advantage of the relict earthwork. It is therefore probable that the pits passed out of use at some point prior to the 1880s. The pits remain clearly visible on digital images derived from elevation data and probably therefore survive as earthworks
