A former extractive pit of probable post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and digital images derived from lidar data as an earthwork on the south-west facing slopes south of Wadsbury Farm, Stockland.
The earthworks are irregularly shaped, measuring approximately 72 metres long and between 10 and 20 metres wide, with the long axis crossing the contours of the slope.
The earthwork did not correspond with any explicitly depicted pit or quarry on the Tithe Map for Stockland or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, but does match an area depicted and symbolised as rough ground. This might support the interpretation that although the extractive use of the pit had probably ceased some time prior to the 1840s, the pit earthworks remained as a notable landscape feature and obstruction to cultivation into the late 19th century.
The pit remained clearly visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data and therefore probably survives as an earthwork.
