Monument Type(s) and Dates

  • EXTRACTIVE PIT (Early Medieval to XIX - 1066 AD to 1840 AD (Between))

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any depicted pit or quarry.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

A small and narrow pit annotated as ‘Old Quarry’ was depicted.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST2402 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

A roughly triangular earthwork pit was visible.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

The pit is located within a field pattern probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the middle ages.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A former extractive pit of possible medieval to 19th century date was visible on digital images derived from lidar data as a roughly triangular earthwork up to 50 metres across on the south-west facing slopes above the Corry Brook to the south-east of Rose Farm, Stockland parish.
The earthworks fall within an area depicted and listed as an orchard on the Tithe Map and apportionment for Stockland parish. A small and narrow ‘Old Quarry’ depicted and annotated on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map corresponds in part with the north-west edge of the visible pit but does not reflect the full scope of the earthworks.
The extractive use of the pit had therefore probably ceased prior to the 1840s and possibly in the medieval or post-medieval period. The plot, possibly subsequently viewed as agriculturally marginal land, was probably then reused as an orchard. This pattern of reuse is repeated throughout the survey area. The pit probably survives as an earthwork under an extant coppice.
