Possible former extractive pits of probable medieval to post-medieval date were visible in low light conditions on aerial photographs of 1982 and digital images derived from lidar data as shallow and irregularly shaped earthworks on the south-west facing slopes below Ford Plantation, Dalwood parish. Two almost conjoined pits were visible. The northern pit, measuriong up to 70 metres long and 30 metres wide, was separated from the southern pit, 55 by 23 metres, by a track or footpath.
The earthworks did not correspond with any pit or quarry depicted on the Tithe Map for Stockland or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and had therefore probably passed out of use prior to the 1840s. The absence of any depicted earthworks might support the interpretation that the pit had been unused for some considerable time. The pits are likely to survive as shallow earthworks.
