HER Number:MDV115704
Name:Former orchard south west of Snodwell Farm, Stockland parish

Summary

The remains of ridges, probably made for tree planting or improved drainage from the post-medieval period to 20th century were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s as low and narrow parallel earthwork banks on the south-west facing slopes to the south-west of Snodwell Farm, Stockland parish.

Monument Type(s) and Dates

  • ORCHARD (Post Medieval to XX - 1540 AD to 1947 AD (Between))

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The earthwork banks fall within a plot depicted as an orchard.

Royal Air Force, 1947, RAF/CPE/UK/1974, RAF/CPE/UK/1974 RP 4308-4309 11-APR-1947 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356127.

Slight parallel earthwork banks were visible.

Ordnance Survey, 1982, OS/82218 V, OS/82218 V 1158-1159 28-AUG-1982 (Aerial Photograph). SDV359504.

The banks could not be identified as earthworks.

Bluesky International, 2016, LiDAR DTM data (0.5m resolution) Blackdown Hills and East Devon AONBs: 3 transects, LIDAR ST2103 Bluesky International DTM 30-APR-2016 (Cartographic). SDV359714.

The banks are largely not apparent although a small number might survive as very slight earthworks.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

The remains of ridges, probably made for tree planting or improved drainage from the post-medieval period to 20th century were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s as low and narrow parallel earthwork banks on the south-west facing slopes to the south-west of Snodwell Farm, Stockland parish.
The banks extended over an area of approximately 0.5 hectares and were spaced up to approximately 5 metres apart. Their alignment was largely across to the contours, presumably to aid drainage, although a small area of banks on the same alignment as the contours was visible to the south of the area. The earthworks fell within an area depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and are therefore interpreted as ridges made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage.
By 1947 the tree density within the orchard was low revealing the slight earthworks underlying earthwork banks across the orchard plot. The orchard plot and surrounding field boundaries have now been cleared and entirely absorbed into a larger pasture field. The relict field boundaries remain clearly visible on digital images derived from lidar data but the tree planting banks area apparent only as fragmentary and very slight earthworks, and have probably been mostly levelled.
