Former extractive pits of possible post-medieval to mid-19th century date are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, to the northeast of Benshayne Farm, Culmstock. The four earthworks are sub-oval in shape and measure between 40m to 66m in length and between 30m to 38m in width. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the available 19th century mapping. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pits had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century. The earthworks are located in proximity to a clay pit depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map, as well as other similar earthwork pits recorded during this survey.
