A possible clay pit of between medieval to 19th century date is visible as earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, to the northwest of Bodham’s Farm. The earthwork is irregular in shape, measures approximately 67m in length by 40m in width and abuts Culmbridge Lane along its northern edge. The site of the earthwork is depicted as an orchard on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s, the orchard likely being established here following the abandonment of the extraction pit. This association between extraction pit and orchard has been a common theme during this survey. Clay pits are also depicted in close proximity here, suggesting this earthwork was also likely utilised for such. A slag heap is also recorded in close proximity to the northeast (MDV114617) so may have been associated with an iron working site nearby. The possible clay pit remains visible as an earthwork pit on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
