Two possible former extractive pits of unknown date were visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in early 2016 as earthworks cut into the north-west facing slope of the Otter valley east of Hale farm, below Axminster Road. The purpose of the pits is unknown but several sand and marl pits are depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map in this area and a similar function is probable. A possible slight spoil mound is visible below the easternmost pit. The relict earthworks do not match any quarry or extractive pits depicted on this historic map and had therefore probably passed out of use prior to the 1840s.
