Evidence of large scale extraction or quarrying, probably for gravel, was visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 as an earthwork pit or quarry edge cut into the south-facing slopes of Agland’s hill, south-east of Whitehorn Farm, Monkton parish
Over 400 metres of quarry edge is evidenced by the irregular earthworks. A scarp or sharp break of slope is depicted for around 150 metres on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map at circa ST197011, and annotated Old Gravel Pit. This indicates that the extraction predated the late 19th century. The field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Monkton also closely follow the visible earthworks, supporting the interpretation that the post-medieval field and settlement pattern in this location was shaped by earlier extractive activity. The extractive earthworks are therefore tentatively interpreted as possibly medieval to early post-medieval in date.
