A former extractive pit of probably post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in early 2016 as an earthwork pit cut into an east facing ridge to the east of Whitehall Farm overlooking the River Otter, Luppitt parish.
The pit is roughly D-shaped and abuts an extant field boundary of probable medieval origin. The visible earthwork measures approximately 55 metres along the longest edge, against the boundary, and 30 metres wide.
No quarry or extractive pit is depicted in this location on the Tithe Map for Luppit, but the Ordnance Survey First Edition map shows its approximate extent as rough ground or scrub vegetation surrounding a smaller pond.
This supports the interpretation that the extractive pit had passed out of use prior to the later 19th century but that the earthwork remained an extant feature that continued to determined landuse in this location; otherwise agriculturally marginal plots subsequently used for woodland is a common pattern noted in the survey area.
