Four small pits were visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in early 2016 as earthwork pits cut into the steep north-west facing slopes within and adjacent to Hedgend Plantation, north of Barnfield Farm, Monkton Parish.
The pits are all oval or roughly circular in shape in shape, measuring between approximately 10 to 17 metres across. Three are located within Hedgend Plantation, with the fourth 25 metres to the north-west of the woodland at circa ST19300294.
The pits are interpreted as extractive pits of of unknown but probably post-medieval to 19th century date. The visible earthworks did not correspond with any quarries or extractive pits depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pits had passed out of use prior to the early 19th century.
