The visible earthworks correspond with two delineated areas.

Two possible former extractive pits of unknown but probably post-medieval to 19th century date were visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 as earthwork pits cut into the north-west facing slope of the Otter Valley, below Hedgend Plantation, Monkton Parish.
The pits are roughly D-shaped and abut extant field boundaries, part of a field system that has been characterised as being of post-medieval date, but which may have medieval elements. They measure up to 25 metres across and might be connected where the field boundaries meet.
No quarries or extractive pits are depicted in this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map but dotted lines define their approximate extent on the Tithe Map for Monkton. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pits remained visible as notable earthworks into the early 19th century, although possibly disused, but had probably passed out of use by the later 19th century.
