Possible former extractive pits were visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 as narrow earthwork pits cut into the upper north-west facing slopes of the Otter Valley, within Hedgend Plantation, Monkton Parish.
The pits are irregular in shape but respect the line of linear field or plantation boundaries of probable post-medieval date. The cuttings also appear relatively superficial and follow the contours of the slope.
They are interpreted as pits for the extraction of shallow surface deposits such as sand or gravel of probably post-medieval to 19th century date. No quarries or extractive pits are depicted in this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map, supporting the interpretation that they had passed out of use prior to the early 19th century. The earthworks are obscured from view on aerial photographs by dense tree cover.
