Possible former extractive pits and an associated spoil heap of probably post-medieval to 19th century date were visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 as earthworks on the upper north-west facing slopes of the Otter Valley, within Hedgend Plantation, south-east of Monkton Barton, Monkton Parish.
The pits are circular or rectilinear in shape and range between small pits 2 to 7 metres in diameter to larger pits circa 27 metres across. The large pits abut the plantation track.
No quarries or extractive pits are depicted in this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map, supporting the interpretation that they had passed out of use prior to the early 19th century. The earthworks are obscured from view on aerial photographs by dense tree cover.
