Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

An extractive pit of probable post-medieval to 19th century date was visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data, on the higher west-facing slope of the Otter Valley, east of Hayne Farm, Uppottery parish.
The pit is irregularly polygonal in shape and measures up to circa 80 metres by 45 metres in size.
There is no quarry or earthwork pit depicted in this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, but the plot is named Hayne Pit and depicted as woodland. The Tithe Apportionment for Upottery names this plot (1663) as Pit and lists it as woodland. This cartographic evidence supports the interpretation that the extractive pit had passed out of use prior to the 1840s, the otherwise possible agriculturally marginal plot subsequently established as woodland. This is a recurring theme noted by the survey.
