Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

Linear and curvilinear earthwork banks and ditches were visible on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 on the west-facing slopes of the Otter Valley, south of Claypitts Farm, Upottery. The earthwork banks are circa 4 to 5 metres wide, with some flanked by narrower ditches.
The banks possibly correspond in part to field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Upottery. It is clear that the relict earthworks do not match the boundaries as shown on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map, which are also visible as more regular relict earthworks. It is possible that the relict banks might be evidence of both late medieval and post-medieval phases of enclosure, and that some subsequent reorganisation of the enclosure pattern occurred in the mid-19th century in this location.
