An extraction pit of likely post-medieval to 19th century date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, to the north of Kitts Farm. The irregular shaped earthwork measures approximately 50m in length by 30m in width and is located within the site of a former orchard depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s, the orchard likely being established following the abandonment of the extraction pit. A number of clay pits are depicted in the vicinity here on this map, which gives a good indication as to the likely use of the earthwork. It remains visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
