An earthwork pit was visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 on the east-facing slopes of the Otter Valley, north-east of Hill View House, Upottery parish.
The pit is irregular in shape and measures circa 65 by 45 metres in size. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit depicted on the Tithe Map or Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map; their approximate location is depicted as scrub vegetation or woodland on both historic maps. However, the establishment of woodland, most commonly orchards, within former extractive pits, land that otherwise might be seen as agriculturally marginal, is a pattern frequently recorded by the survey. The earthwork is therefore interpreted as a probable extractive pit, possibly a marl pit of post-medieval to early 19th century date.
The pit is depicted as a pond on current Ordnance Survey MasterMap base maps.
