  • FIELD BOUNDARY (Post Medieval to XIX - 1540 AD to 1840 AD (Between))

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any depicted field boundaries.

Royal Air Force, 1947, RAF/CPE/UK/1974, RAF/CPE/UK/1974 RS 2305-2306 11-APR-1947 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356127.

The curvilinear ditches were visible as slight earthworks.

Ordnance Survey, 1996, OS/96570, OS/96570 V 49 08-MAY-1996 (Aerial Photograph). SDV359489.

Two earthwork ditches remained visible.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

The relict earthwork is visible within an area probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields.

Next Perspectives, 2010, Next Perspectives PGA Tile Ref:, Next Perspectives APGB Imagery ST1907 04-MAY-2010 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356215.

The earthwork ditches remained visible.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

Two sinuous ditches were clearly visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1996 on the north-facing slopes to the south of Aller Farm, Upottery parish. The visible earthwork did not correspond to any boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Upottery, but did fall within an area in which the field pattern has been characterised as probably medieval in origin.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as field boundaries of probable medieval origin that were removed prior to the 1840s. The earthwork remains clearly visible on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken in 2010.
