Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

Linear banks and ditches were visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards, and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, on the east-facing slopes overlooking a tributary to the River Otter, west of Upottery village.
The southernmost of the visible earthworks correspond with boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Upottery. The double banks circa 50 to 150 metres to the north do not closely match the orientation of the boundaries depicted in this precise location. These banks appear to overlay a narrow ditch that may be evidence of the boundary depicted on the Tithe Map; the banks do not match any boundaries shown on the OS First Edition map, possibly supporting the interpretation of a phase of enclosure reorganisation between circa 1840 and circa 1880.
The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as field boundaries of probable post-medieval to 19th century date. The boundaries enclosed an area of narrow parallel earthwork banks, probably evidence of an orchard, recorded separately.
