Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any depicted boundary. They do in part correspond with a marked trackway.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any depicted boundary or track.

Ordnance Survey, 1996, OS/96570, OS/96570 V 49 08-MAY-1996 (Aerial Photograph). SDV359489.

Subtle earthwork banks or terraces are visible adjacent to shallow hollows.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

The relict earthwork is visible within an area probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields.

Next Perspectives, 2010, Next Perspectives PGA Tile Ref:, Next Perspectives APGB Imagery ST1907 04-MAY-2010 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356215.

The banks or terraces remain visible as subtle earthworks.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A possible former field boundary and road or track were visible as an earthwork bank or terrace and adjacent ditch or hollow way on aerial photographs of 1996, on the south-east-facing slopes east of Glebe Farm, Upottery.
The visible earthworks do not match any boundary depicted in this location on the Tithe Map for Upottery. They do however, fall within an area in which the field pattern has been characterised as probably medieval in origin. The bank or terrace earthwork is therefore interpreted as a field boundary of medieval to post-medieval date that was removed prior to the 1840s.
The north to south orientated section of the possible trackway does coincide in part with a route shown on the Tithe Map, but the east to west elements do not and probably also passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century.
The earthworks remain visible as slight features on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken in 2010.
