A probable former extractive pit approximately 50 metres across was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards as an irregularly shaped earthwork and cropmark on the south-facing slopes below Buckeshayes Farm, Upottery parish.
The visible earthwork did not correspond with any pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map or Tithe Map for Upottery, but did match a plot depicted as an orchard. This might support the interpretation that the pit had passed out of use prior to the mid to late 19th century and that the woodland was established on the site of the disused pit; the establishment of orchards or other woodland on former extractive sites is a recurring theme noted by the survey.
The orchard had been cleared of trees by 1947 and the plot may have returned to an extractive use by the early 1980s. This might be supported by the continuation of thte cropmark of the pit beyond the southern orchard boundary on aerial photographs of 1996.
