A former extractive pit of probably post-medieval to early 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs of 1982 as a shallow earthwork pit on the south-east-facing slopes south-west of Luppitt Inn Farm, Luppitt parish.
The pit was roughly rectilinear and measured approximately 15 by 70 metres in size. The visible earthwork did not correspond precisely with any features depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map, but might have been an extension of an Old Marl Pit depicted and annotated immediately to the north-west of the adjacent field boundary. The pit might also have been constrained by a second former boundary to the south-east, visible only as a relict earthwork and recorded separately. This might support the interpretation that the earthwork had passed out of use prior to the late-19th century.
The possible former marl pit remained identifiable on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014 and probably survives as a slight earthwork.
