The remains of ridges made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage were visible as low, parallel earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1947 on the west-facing combe slopes to the west of Shelves Farm, Luppitt.
The banks were spaced up to approximately 5 metres apart and were aligned cross-contour, roughly north-west to south-east. In 1947 the visible earthworks covered an area of approximately 0.3 hectares and remained very lightly covered with trees.
The earthworks fell within an irregularly shaped plot that closely matched an area depicted as orchard on the Tithe Map for Luppit (plot 652) and the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map.
The banks are therefore interpreted as the remains of orchard tree planting banks of post-medieval to 19th century date, made to improve soil depth and aid drainage. The plot boundary was removed and the ridges possibly levelled by 1982.
