Possible former field boundaries of between medieval to 19th century date are visible as a series of earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the north of Ley Farm. The earthwork banks are all northwest to southeast aligned and are situated on moderate northeast facing slope. The Parish Tithe map appears to be un-surveyed here, so it is not possible to determine whether these field boundaries were extant by this time, although they do appear to have passed out of use by the time of the First Edition Ordnance Survey map. The Historic Landscape Characterisation project has classified this area as comprising ‘medieval enclosures’. There is, however, some uncertainty regarding the function of these earthworks, as two of the ‘field boundaries’ appear to be defined by two sets of parallel earthwork banks either side of a central ditch. The presence of these ditches is slightly curious and it is possible that these two features are associated with the remains of a catch meadow system (MDV114699) also recorded here, rather than representing field boundaries.
