A possible pit is indicated by a small enclosed area south-east of the field boundary.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST1004-ST1104 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

A circular shallow earthwork pit was visible.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

The boundary has been characterised as possibly based on a medieval strip field enclosure pattern.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A probable former extractive pit was visible on digital images derived from lidar data as a circular earthwork pit approximately 27 metres in diameter, bisected by a field boundary on the north-west-facing slope south of Stafford Barton, Broadhembury parish.
The pit is not depicted on the current Ordnance Survey MasterMap base layer, but corresponds with a small enclosed area on north-west side of the field boundary on the Tithe Map for Broadhembury, and a small area of scrub and possible pond on the south-east of the boundary on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map.
This supports the interpretation that the extractive pit predates the mid-19th century and had possibly passed out of use by the 1890s, but might also support the interpretation that the creation of the pit predates the field boundary, which is probably later medieval in date.
