Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A probable former extractive pit was visible on aerial photographs of the 1950s and digital images derived from lidar data as a roughly rectilinear earthwork pit approximately 69 by 30 metres in size, on the north-west-facing slope approximately 125 metres south of Stafford Barton, Broadhembury parish.
The pit is not depicted on the current Ordnance Survey MasterMap base layer, but corresponds with an enclosed area on the Tithe Map for Broadhembury. This plot, plot 186, is named and listed on the apportionments as ‘The Nursery’. This might support the interpretation that the extractive pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century and that a tree nursery was established on the sheltered site of the disused pit; the establishment of woodland on such otherwise agriculturally marginal former extractive sites is a recurring theme noted by the survey. The nursery plot is not depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and might therefore have been cleared between circa 1840 and 1890.
