The remains of linear gullies running perpendicular to the contours of the scarp and circular and irregularly shaped mounds were visible as earthworks on the west-facing slopes of the scarp circa 400 metres north of Witness Moor, Broadhembury parish, on aerial photographs of 1947 and 1950 onwards and digital images derived from lidar data capured from 1998 to 2014. The earthworks are most readily definable on the images derived from lidar, specifically DTM visualisations.
The linear hollows were up to circa 5 metres wide and up to 28 metres long, running perpendicular to the contours of the scarp. They are interpreted as having formed over the collapsed remains of former post-medieval whetstone mine galleries.
Immediately downslope of the collapsed tunnels three earthwork mounds up to 20 metres wide and between 13 to 35 metres long were visible. These were probably formed from the spoil excavated from the mine galleries.
The earthworks are partially obscured by light woodland cover on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010 but probably survive as earthworks.
