A curvilinear earthwork bank, circa 3 metres in width along the west side of the river, is visible on aerial photographs taken in the late 1940s. It may be a part of the 1940-1941 anti-tank obstacle that forms part of the Second World War Taunton Stop Line immediately to the west (MV48158), or alternatively may be earlier flood banks. The earthwork is not visible on the more recent aerial imagery and may have been levelled or eroded.

The interviewees state that the Yarty and Axe were dredged as part of the anti-invasion preparations, and the silt was used to bank up the sides.
