A possible post-medieval to 19th century extraction pit is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the northeast of Bowerwood Farm. The sub-oval shaped earthwork pit measures approximately 67m in length by 45m in width, with a mound additionally visible on lidar images and possibly derived from up-cast material to the north. The earthworks are situated on gentle southeast facing slope, within the northeast corner of a former land parcel, one of the field boundaries of which has since been removed. There was, however, some uncertainty as to whether these earthworks are of natural origin. They were, nonetheless recorded given their close proximity to an ‘Old Quarry’ (MDV47216) depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map.
