By the time of the Tithe Survey many marl pits on the Blackdown Hills were redundant, with former quarries often utilised as orchards or copses.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A large irregularly shaped pit circa 220 metres long and 80 metres wide was visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, as an earthwork on the west-facing slopes south-west of Beer Farm, Payhembury parish.
The visible earthworks did not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the available 19th century mapping. The pit did correspond with plots 155, 156, 157 and 158 on the Tithe Map for Payhembury, listed as Higher Orchard, Coppice, and Pit Orchard associated with the former site of Broadleaze Farm on the Apportionments.
This supports the interpretation that the extractive pits had passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century. On the Blackdown Hills many extractive pits such as marl pits are known to have been redundant by the time of the Tithe Survey, the former quarries often utilised as orchards or copses.
